Contrabridge

Contrabridge Contra dances in Cambridge UK, with fabulous live music and gender free calling. ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜'๐˜€ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ? No partner is necessary, and new dancers are especially welcome.

Contra dance is community folk dance similar to ceilidh or barn dance, and we will dance to live music! Anyone may ask anyone to dance, and everybody is supportive and friendly in enjoying the dance together. You don't need prior experience, mistakes are welcome, and the aim is to have lots of fun! The caller will teach each dance, then prompt when you dance to the music. You will dance with a par

tner and another pair of dancers and progress to a new pair each time through the tune, moving up and down the line so you dance with everybody.

Avoid perfumes and scents. Swirly skirts are a lot of fun to wear for contra (for people of all genders). No need to bring a partner.

Contra dancing is an activity that involves hand-to-hand or arm-to-arm contact and a โ€˜ballroom holdโ€™ swing. Being physically close to multiple other dancers in an indoor space carries risk of spreading COVID-19. We ask that all attendees at our dances consider the following risk mitigations:
- not coming to this dance with unexplained respiratory symptoms.
- not coming to this dance if you are feeling unwell for any unexplained reason
- not coming to this dance if you know or suspect you have COVID-19 (or any other illness that may be spread by folk dancing).
- not coming to this dance if government guidelines say you should stay at home.
- testing before dancing - LFTs are easily available for ยฃ2 from most supermarkets and pharmacies
- being fully vaccinated - COVID-19 vaccines and boosters reduce the risk of severe illness and may limit spread. As organisers we will mitigate risk by:
- keeping the room as well ventilated as possible.
- providing facilities for contactless payment (but will also accept cash). Face coverings have been shown to reduce COVID-19 infections in indoor spaces. However, they are currently not recommended by the WHO for vigorous physical activity. Please respect othersโ€™ choices about wearing masks.

If you have any questions about the dance, what to expect, what to wear, or anything, feel free to reach out to our page, or ask any of the organisers on the night.

Contra Sutra are coming (back) to the UK in May!
And Marni (part of the group who started Contrabridge) will be arriving a little ahead of Dave and Ben, to play for us in April.

We haven't updated here in quite a while, but we have a lot of fun things coming up this spring and summer to tell you about!

First, we're going back to England!

Before the rest of the band arrives, Marni will play the 25 April Contrabridge dance in Cambridge with Alan of Contrasaurus and Vic of Bearded Dragons, Adam Hughes calling.

When Dave Bartley and Ben Schreiber arrive, Contra Sutra will head to May Hey Days at Evesham May 1-4 - come spend the early May Bank Holiday weekend with us there!

Meet our band for our Contrabridge dance on Sat 21st March, Stomping Ground.

Stomping Ground is a new Sheffield-based contra combination comprising Ian Roberts on melodeons and feet, Matt Quinn on tenor banjo and Charley Roberts on piano. Their mission is simple - deliver joyful, solid dance tunes that put a smile on your face and a beat in your feet. The name evokes that satisfying sound of the dancers' feet decisively hitting the floor in sync - a sure sign that the trio of dancers, musicians and caller is working together as one.

Meet our caller for our Contrabridge dance on Sat 21st March, Rob Humphrey.

Rob Humphrey has been attending folk dance events his whole life, but only discovered Contra dances in 2015 when one happened to follow a handstand class he was attending. He was hooked pretty much immediately, and started calling shortly afterwards. Based in Cambridge, Rob enjoys contra dances with pleasing patterns and unusual geometry that flow and provide opportunities for embellishments.

Meet our caller for our Contrabridge dance on Sat 21st February, Andrew Swaine:

Andrew is one of the country's leading callers, for whom contra dancing is a passion. He started calling in Cambridge when a student just before the millennium, and turned his hand to contra shortly after as a wave of great English contra bands was beginning. Since then he's called at events and festivals all over the place and written some contra dances that push the boundaries of what defines a contra dance. He aims to give a programme that balances giving every dancer a great experience while showcasing the variety of choreography in contra dancing, as well as including the occasional square.
